Snow in Joburg, and Gauteng basically shut down for winter
Okay so we all saw it, that rare cut off low system brought proper icy rain and even snow flurries to Johannesburg, which doesn’t happen often at all. I know there’s an Eastern Cape couple who drove their little girl out just to see the snow, and honestly that’s the kind of thing that makes cold snaps almost worth it. But let’s be real, if you’re on the road in Gauteng this week, drive slower than usual, our roads and drivers are not built for this.
Domestic worker jobs at their lowest since the Covid years
New numbers show domestic worker employment has dropped to its worst Q2 level in six years, basically back to pandemic lows. This one hits close to home for a lot of us because so many households in SA rely on domestic workers, and it goes both ways, families are cutting back and workers are losing income they desperately need. It tells you something about how tight things still are for ordinary households when even this kind of work is drying up.

Presidency and Eskom’s own chairman are now publicly at odds
Eskom chairman Mteto Nyati raised concerns about the plans to break up Eskom, and instead of a quiet conversation behind closed doors, the Presidency came out swinging in public. When the guy running the board and the guy running the country can’t agree on Eskom’s future in public like this, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that the restructuring is being handled with a steady hand. We’ve been burned by Eskom chaos before, so I’ll be watching this one closely.

Cape Town’s mandatory meter rollout
The City of Cape Town is pushing ahead with a mandatory electricity meter replacement programme over the next few months. If you’re in Cape Town, keep an eye out for notices in your area because this isn’t optional, it’s compulsory. Meter upgrades are generally a good thing for accuracy and prepaid systems, but I always say, get the details from the City directly and don’t let randoms with clipboards into your yard without proper ID.
