Petrol just hit the highest price in our history
From today we’re paying more at the pumps than we ever have, full stop. So forgive me if I raise an eyebrow when the President stands up in parliament and tells us the economy is recovering. The two stories landed on the same morning, record fuel prices on one hand and “things are looking up” on the other, and I know which one I feel in my wallet.

Ramaphosa says load reduction is on its way out
Speaking of that recovery talk, the President told parliament that improved tax revenue and steadier debt mean load reduction can finally end after two decades. I’ll believe it when I go a full winter without my lights dipping, but credit where it’s due, even saying it out loud is a shift from where we were a couple of years back. Let’s see if Eskom can actually back it up.

The middle class is buckling under debt
Here’s the part that worries me more than any headline. New data shows 43% of middle class folks defaulted on repayments recently, which is nearly half of the people who are supposed to be the engine of this economy. Between the petrol, the groceries and the bond, the squeeze is real and it’s not just the usual suspects feeling it anymore.

Snow and heavy rain are battering us today
Seven weather warnings are out across the provinces, with snow and heavy rain making the rounds this Wednesday. If you’re in the higher lying parts of the country, drive like everyone around you has forgotten how to handle wet roads, because some of them have. Wrap up warm and check on the older folks in your street.

So here’s my question for the morning. Do you actually buy that the economy is turning a corner, or does record petrol and a middle class drowning in debt tell a different story? Drop your honest take below, I want to hear it.

Stay warm and watch those roads out there.

Honestly, this fuel price spike is going to hit remote work harder than people realise. My commute’s sorted because I’m in Pretoria and mostly work from home, but I know devs in smaller towns who’re now spending serious cash just getting to the office a few days a week.

The knock-on effect on ISP infrastructure concerns me more though. Telkom and the other providers have to maintain those network nodes in rural areas, and fuel costs directly impact their operational expenses. We’ve already seen slower rollouts on fibre to secondary towns, and this’ll probably make it worse before it gets better.

What’s your setup like? Are you working from home or does your industry force you into the office regularly? I’m curious whether people are starting to push back harder on return-to-office mandates now that petrol’s hit these prices. Seems like the economics favour remote work even more now, yet some companies are still demanding butts in seats.
