Ramaphosa says he’s not going anywhere

Cyril came out and made it clear, he’s not resigning, full stop, and he’s apparently already got a next move lined up. Whatever the Constitutional Court situation threw at him, he’s choosing to face it head-on rather than step aside. I’ll say this, the man doesn’t lack confidence. Whether that’s actually good for South Africa right now is a whole other conversation, but at least we know where things stand.

All Western Cape schools closed today because of severe storms

If you’ve got family in the Cape, schools are shut today and it’s no public holiday. The Western Cape government called it after serious storms rolled through the province, and looking at the weather, it was the right call. We’re heading deep into winter now and those Cape storms are genuinely no joke. Hope everyone down there is staying safe and dry.

New housing bill could undo constitutional protections for millions

This one slipped under the radar a bit but it really deserves attention. There’s a new bill in the pipeline that critics are warning could let courts evict families without offering any alternative accommodation, effectively reversing protections the Constitution has guaranteed for years. 158-year-old diamond mine reaches the end of the road

Ekapa Minerals is heading into liquidation, and with it one of the oldest diamond mining operations in the country closes its doors for good. A hundred and fifty-eight years is a remarkable run by any measure. This industry built communities and shaped the economy of this country for generations, so watching another chapter close like this is genuinely sad, especially for the workers caught in the middle of it.

What’s your read on Ramaphosa, do you think he can genuinely hold his position or is this just buying himself time? Keen to hear what you all think on this one.

Stay warm this week, Pretoria’s been icy in the mornings and I don’t think that’s letting up anytime soon.

Ja, can’t say this shocked me one bit. Cyril has never been the type to walk away quietly, so I suppose we carry on from here. The part that frustrates me though is that all this political drama just eats up so much time and energy, and meanwhile the rest of us are still watching our budgets shrink every month and wondering what the school fees letter is going to say in January.

My school still hasn’t had any clarity on the infrastructure budget for this year, and that’s where I feel it most directly. Whether he stays or eventually goes, what I really want is for someone to just focus on the basics for ordinary families. At the end of the day we all just want stability, and right now that feels very far away.
