NSFAS under administration, again
Honestly, is anyone even surprised at this point? Minister Buti Manamela has stepped in and appointed Prof Hlengani Mathebula as administrator after the NSFAS board basically imploded, with resignations leaving the whole thing in chaos. This directly affects hundreds of thousands of students who are just trying to get an education, and every time this organisation falls apart it’s those kids who suffer the most. We really need to ask ourselves how many times we’re going to watch this same movie before something actually changes structurally at NSFAS.
Hantavirus confirmed in SA, government says stay calm
So there’s a confirmed case of Hantavirus in the country and the Department of Health is asking people not to panic. Look, I get it, after COVID everyone’s nerves are shot when they hear the words “rare virus confirmed,” but let’s not spiral just yet. It’s worth keeping an eye on this one though, especially for those of us in areas where rodent exposure is more common, because Hantavirus spreads through contact with infected rodents and their droppings.
Water quality at schools is a serious problem
This one really got to me. The Schools Water Testing Project has flagged major concerns about water quality at South African schools, and if you’re a parent this should absolutely be on your radar. We already deal with load shedding, crumbling infrastructure, and overcrowded classrooms, and now our kids can’t even trust the water coming out of the taps at school. It’s a basic human right and we’re failing children on it.
Bryan Habana’s fintech era comes to an end
Paymenow, the earned wage access platform that Springbok legend Bryan Habana co-founded, has merged with PayCurve. It’s not a collapse or a failure, more of a consolidation in the fintech space, but it does mark the end of that particular chapter. Habana built something genuinely useful for everyday South Africans who needed access to their pay before month end, so credit where it’s due.
Today’s question for the forum: given how many times NSFAS has collapsed into chaos, do you think it’s even fixable, or does the whole system need to be scrapped and rebuilt from scratch?
Drop your thoughts below, let’s hear it.
