America coming for SA with more tariffs

So the US Trade Representative is now proposing fresh tariffs on South Africa following some Section 301 investigation, and honestly, I’m not surprised but I am tired. We’re still trying to navigate the AGOA situation and now there’s another layer of trade pain coming our way. This is going to hit our exporters hard, and when exporters hurt, jobs hurt. Washington really doesn’t make it easy to be their friend right now.

Woolworths stores being deliberately targeted

A forensic expert is saying what a lot of us were already thinking, that the recent explosions at Woolworths stores aren’t random incidents. Someone has a specific beef with Woolworths as a company. That’s a deeply unsettling thought, because these are busy shopping centres with families walking around. I really hope law enforcement is taking this seriously and not just treating each incident in isolation.

FlySafair cutting fuel surcharges

Some genuinely good news for a change. FlySafair is dropping its fuel surcharges this month because jet fuel costs have come down a bit. For those of us who fly between Joburg and Cape Town regularly, or anywhere really, every rand off the ticket price matters. It’s not a massive saving but it’s something, and it shows that when input costs drop, some companies do actually pass it on to customers.

Comrades runner robbed at gunpoint during training

This one really got to me. Phillip Ralehlaka, a Gauteng runner who’s a Comrades veteran, was robbed at gunpoint while out on a training run. The man is preparing for one of the most gruelling races in the world and he can’t even train safely on our streets. It’s a reminder that crime doesn’t care about context or effort or dedication. This is the reality so many of our runners, cyclists and joggers face every single day.
