Criminals have two specific items in their sights at South African homes
Thieves around the country are becoming more focused and deliberate, and two particular items found at residential properties are now squarely in their crosshairs. Given everything South Africans have spent on home upgrades and workarounds over the last few years, it doesn’t take much imagination to guess what’s attracting this attention. Worth reading this one and then having a honest look at your own property setup, especially if you’re in Gauteng where opportunistic crime moves fast.
Seriously, think carefully before you start stockpiling fuel at home
I get it, fuel prices are brutal and the instinct to buy in bulk and save a few rand makes complete sense. But keeping petrol or diesel at home comes with fire risks and legal headaches that people only tend to discover after something goes badly wrong. Rather find another way to stretch the budget, one that doesn’t involve a jerrycan sitting next to the braai.
Helen Zille is comparing her Joburg mayoral push to Orlando Pirates chasing the PSL title
Only here will you get a senior DA politician leaning into football metaphors to make her political point. Zille reckons she’s close to taking the mayoralty in Johannesburg, same way Pirates are right there fighting for the league. It’s an interesting move to try and connect beyond the usual DA crowd, and it’ll either land really well or make half the city cringe. Probably both, knowing us.
Lions lose to Munster but still secure their Champions Cup spot for next season
Painful to watch, because the Lions had the chances and just couldn’t put them away. That’s been the recurring frustration with this team, so much potential and then clinical finishing lets them down when it counts. The silver lining is that Champions Cup rugby is confirmed for next year, so the European campaign continues, and hopefully they’ll sharpen up by then.
Today’s talking point for the forum: with crime becoming more targeted and specific, do you feel like home security in South Africa is actually keeping pace with how clever criminals are getting, or are most of us still just hoping the gate motor and the alarm do the job?
Enjoy the Sunday, get some rest.
