Sundowns put German giants to the sword at home
Okay this one genuinely made my morning. Mamelodi Sundowns beat RB Leipzig 3-1 at Lucas Moripe yesterday, coming from behind to do it. A German Bundesliga club, not some random friendly opposition, and Downs turned it around in front of a home crowd. I know it’s an exhibition match and people will say it means nothing, but the confidence boost going into the new season? Massive.
Bafana limp to the World Cup after drawing with Nicaragua
Right, so the contrast couldn’t be more stark. While Sundowns were dismantling a European club, Bafana were grinding out a draw with Nicaragua at Orlando Stadium, and Lyle Foster missed a penalty on top of it all. Coach Hugo Broos was clearly frustrated, calling Nicaragua “very negative,” but honestly, we can’t keep blaming the opposition when we can’t break down a team ranked well below us. We’re going to the World Cup, which is still incredible, but we need to sort out our finishing before we get there.
Woolworths beefing up security after store explosions
This is genuinely unsettling. After explosions hit two Woolworths stores, the retailer has announced it’s increasing security measures across all its branches nationwide. No one wants to feel unsafe doing their weekend grocery run, and for a brand that positions itself as a premium, comfortable shopping experience, this is a serious reputational moment. I hope they get to the bottom of who’s behind this quickly, because it’s the kind of thing that makes ordinary people anxious.
Mamelodi Square sold for R148 million
Staying local, Exemplar has bought out the remaining 50% stake in Mamelodi Square, our own backyard here in Tshwane, for R148 million. They now own the whole mall outright. It’s interesting because Mamelodi Square is genuinely one of the busiest community malls in the city, and having a single JSE-listed owner could mean bigger investment and upgrades down the line. Or it could just mean higher tenant costs passed on to shoppers. We’ll see.
So let’s talk football, because I can’t stop thinking about it. Sundowns beating Leipzig while Bafana struggle against Nicaragua on the same weekend, what does that say about the state of our national team versus our club football? Drop your thoughts below.
