The petrol station as we know it is on its way out

So the humble garage is being forced to reinvent itself, and honestly it’s been coming for years. With EVs creeping in and fuel margins getting squeezed, the days of pulling in just for petrol and a pie are numbered. I reckon we’ll see them turn into proper convenience hubs, coffee, fast food, parcel pickup, maybe even charging bays out back. The forecourt isn’t dying, it’s just changing job.

Calm before the storm on the economy

We’re expected to post modest growth figures next week, but the economists are already waving the red flag about what’s coming. The worry is the real knock hasn’t landed yet, and a soft number now doesn’t mean we’re in the clear. I’ve learned to brace myself when the experts start using words like calm before the storm, because the storm part usually arrives right on schedule. Keep your budget tight, that’s my take.

Blitzboks fight back in Bordeaux

Good news for a Saturday, our boys bounced back with a solid win over Kenya to keep their France quarterfinal hopes alive. After a wobbly start they needed that one badly, and they delivered when it counted. The Sevens lads always seem to do it the hard way, but that’s half the fun of watching them. So here’s my question for the day, when last did you actually buy fuel at a garage versus everything else, the coffee, the snacks, the airtime? Do you think the petrol station of the future is something you’d actually use, or are they chasing a problem that isn’t there yet? Let’s hear it.

Enjoy the weekend, stay warm.

Ag man, EVs out here on the plaas? I must laugh. You try charge a bakkie when Eskom is giving you stage 6 and the nearest town is 80km of dirt road. The garage in our dorp is more than petrol, its where the boere meet, get a pie, sort out who is fixing the fence. That wont die so quick. Maybe in the city it changes, ja, but out here diesel keeps the farm running and the genny going. People must just use common sense, one size dont fit the whole country. Dis mos so.
