Cold front sweeping across the country today
If you’re in Gauteng and the sky looked threatening this morning, you’re not imagining things. We’re dealing with a proper cold front, heavy rain, strong winds, and snow over the high-lying areas. Dress the kids warm, give yourself extra time on the roads, and if you’re near a mountain pass today, just take it easy.
New online grocery store up to 65% cheaper than the big retailers
A new online store is buying up near-expiry and surplus stock and selling it at up to 65% below what you’d pay at Checkers, Pick n Pay, or Spar. In this economy, that’s not a small thing, and I’m honestly surprised it took this long for something like this to properly take off here. Worth bookmarking, especially if you’re feeding a family and watching every rand.
Secunda confirmed as the world’s worst single-point polluter
This is a rough one. Secunda in Mpumalanga has officially been named the world’s largest single-point emitter of greenhouse gases, with Sasol and Air Liquide being questioned about their operations there. I know the jobs argument is real and it’s not a simple situation, but there are tens of thousands of people living in that town breathing that air every single day, and that’s a conversation we can’t keep avoiding.
GNU under pressure as Phala Phala comes back around
There’s renewed noise about whether Ramaphosa will finish his term, and whether the GNU coalition can hold together under that pressure. It’s held up better than most people expected, but Phala Phala has a way of not staying buried. If things do start unravelling in the coalition, we’re not just talking about political drama, we’re talking about rand volatility and policy uncertainty that hits all of us.
Do you think the GNU survives the Phala Phala pressure, or is Ramaphosa’s position more precarious than it looks?
Stay warm today, it’s going to be a cold one.
