Get your blankets out, Gauteng is about to freeze
A proper cold front is moving in this week and temperatures here are expected to drop near freezing. If you’re in Pretoria like me, now’s the time to dig out the heaters and check the geyser is behaving before the cold catches us off guard. Honestly the timing tracks, the moment June arrives the Highveld remembers how brutal it can get.

A double blow might be coming on interest rates
After the Reserve Bank hiked rates this week, there’s now talk of another hike landing in July. For anyone with a bond or car repayment, that’s two punches in a row, and it stretches an already tight budget even thinner. I get that they’re fighting inflation, but it’s the ordinary household that feels every single point.

Police suspended over the R360m ‘Cat’ Matlala tender
Several officers have been served with suspension notices linked to the R360 million Matlala tender, and they’ve already been charged internally for breaching adjudication processes. This one’s been simmering for a while, so seeing actual notices go out feels like something is finally moving. Whether it leads anywhere real is another question, we’ve seen plenty of big announcements fizzle out before.

SASSA June grant payments start this week
The children’s grant payments for June kick off this week, and millions of caregivers can start collecting. For so many households this money is the difference between getting through the month and not, so it’s worth knowing the dates if it affects your family. If you’re collecting, go early in the day and avoid the month-end crush at the pay points.

URC semis this Saturday, Bulls and Stormers in the mix
Both the Bulls and Stormers are through to the URC semi-finals this Saturday, which means a cracking weekend of rugby is lined up for us. Two SA sides still standing at this stage is exactly what we want to see, and I’ll definitely be planted in front of the TV. Could be a long, loud Saturday in plenty of households.

So with another rate hike possibly on the way, how are you adjusting your budget this winter, are you cutting back anywhere specific or just gritting your teeth and hoping it eases off?

Chat soon, stay warm out there.

Morning Daniel, you’ve timed this warning well. Joburg has that deceptive sunshine that fools you into leaving the jacket at home, then the evening hits and the office car park feels like Sutherland. We’ve already had the team in Sandton quietly negotiating over the aircon settings, so I know the cold is coming.

My practical worry is always the geyser and the electricity bill, because heaters and a struggling geyser in winter can push your usage up frighteningly fast. Worth wrapping the geyser and dusting off the warm bedding before the front properly settles in.

For anyone working from home this week, layering up and keeping a flask of something hot nearby genuinely helps productivity, rather than blasting a heater all day. How is everyone else preparing, are you bracing for any load shedding alongside the cold, or has your area been holding steady lately?

So true about that deceptive sunshine, ThandiM. I got caught out last week, gorgeous day then I was hunting for a jumper by 5pm. The geyser blanket tip is gold, ours made a real dent in the bill last winter. I’m on team hot drinks too, endless rooibos beats leaving the heater running all day. Load shedding has been quiet in my area lately, fingers crossed it holds. How’s everyone else doing on that front?
