ProNutro says sorry after sparking public outrage
Look, when you mess with South Africans’ breakfast, you’re going to hear about it. ProNutro, which has been on our kitchen shelves for 64 years, made some kind of change that got people genuinely angry, and now they’ve had to come out with a public apology. I don’t know what they were thinking, but this is a reminder that brands with that kind of heritage can’t just do whatever they want without expecting pushback from loyal customers.
Government officials suspended over fake sources in policy documents
This one is genuinely embarrassing. Officials from the Department of Communication and Digital Technology and Home Affairs have been suspended after it came out that they used fabricated sources in official government policy documents. Four people are now facing consequences, and honestly good, because policy built on made-up information affects real people’s lives. You’d think the departments responsible for digital technology and managing our national identity would know better.
Cape Town property owners win big in court
The Western Cape High Court has struck down Cape Town’s system of tying rates and taxes directly to property values, and that’s a significant ruling for homeowners. Property values in Cape Town have gone absolutely wild over the past few years, and a lot of ordinary people were getting hammered with rates bills that didn’t reflect their actual income or ability to pay. This could have implications beyond just Cape Town too, so watch this space.
Local government elections date confirmed, extra public holiday coming
Ramaphosa has officially confirmed the date for the 2026 local government elections, which means we’re getting an extra public holiday added to the calendar. Elections always bring out strong feelings in this country, and after the 2024 national elections shook things up with the GNU, local government voting is going to be very interesting to watch. Start thinking about your ward, people, because local government affects your daily life more than most people realise.
So let’s get a conversation going today. With local government elections on the horizon, what’s the single biggest issue in your area that you want your ward councillor to actually fix? Drop it in the comments below.
Enjoy the long weekend, stay safe out there.
