New tool: which shop has a pensioner special, and on which day?

My sister asked a simple question, which shop gives pensioners a discount, and on which day? It turned out to be surprisingly hard to answer, so I built a small free tool to do it properly.

The honest picture is that most pensioner specials in South Africa are loyalty rewards and national programmes, not money off at the till that changes every week. And nearly all the big shop perks land on a Wednesday.

The finder lets you filter by the day you are shopping, the kind of help you want, and your age, then shows exactly what you can claim from 60.

A few things I tried to get right.

It separates what is reliable from what is not. National programmes like the Clicks and Dis-Chem Wednesday double points, the senior bank accounts, the 50% Gautrain discount, the SARS tax breaks from 65 and the SASSA old-age grant are marked clearly. The store-by-store discounts, like the few percent some Checkers and SPAR branches give, are flagged “varies by branch, ask your store”, because they really do differ from one shop to the next and I did not want to promise something your local branch may not do.

The day filter is sensible. Pick Wednesday and you see that day’s loyalty bumps plus everything you can use on any day, so it never looks empty or misleading.

It covers the savings that are not in the shops. For most pensioners the bigger money is in the municipal rates rebate, the senior tax breaks and the grant, so those are all in there with how to claim them.

The short answer to my sister, by the way, is Wednesday for the big chains.

Everything runs in your browser, nothing is saved or sent anywhere. If you know a pensioner special I have missed, or your local shop does something different, tell me and I will add it. What does your nearest shop do for pensioners?

Good of you to be honest that most of these are loyalty rewards and not actual money off at the till, people always overestimate what the pensioner discount really gets them. The Clicks and Dis-Chem Wednesday double points are the ones that genuinely add up over a year, as long as you remember to swipe every single time, which my wife’s mother never does. I am 57 and quietly counting down to 60 for that 50 percent Gautrain fare, that one is worth more than most of the grocery perks put together.

What a useful little tool, your sister asked the exact question half my staffroom asks every term end. You are so right that people picture money off at the till and then feel let down, when really it’s the Wednesday loyalty points doing the quiet work over a year.

The swiping problem is so real. My mum keeps her Clicks card in the car cubbyhole and forgets it every single time, so now I just load her number on my phone and swipe for her when we shop together. Maybe a tip like that could live next to each shop, a gentle reminder to actually claim the perk.

Does the tool cover the smaller grocery rewards too, like the Pick n Pay Smart Shopper senior bits, or mostly the pharmacy ones? That would help the gogos in my area who do their main shop closer to home :slightly_smiling_face:

A miserly 5% plus restricted to a certain day in the week. Can’t be easy to just do shopping on that day. Should be either 10% on the day or 5% everyday!
