South Africa is a land of diverse natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Its landscapes range from the vibrant blooms of the Cape to the awe-inspiring Drakensberg Mountains. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) recognizes certain locations around the world as World Heritage Sites due to their exceptional universal value. These sites, whether they are natural wonders like deserts and coral reefs, or cultural treasures like ancient cities or sacred locations, are invaluable sources of life and inspiration that we aim to preserve for future generations.
Great overview! The Cradle of Humankind is definitely a standout, it’s surreal to walk through caves where some of our earliest ancestors were discovered. Has anyone here visited the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape? The history of that ancient kingdom fascinates me.
Haven’t made it to Mapungubwe yet, but the Cradle of Humankind is well worth the trip. The Sterkfontein Caves tour is brilliant. You should definitely go if you get the chance.
The Cradle is incredible, but living in KZN we are honestly so spoilt because we have two UNESCO sites practically on our doorstep. iSimangaliso Wetland Park is just a few hours from Durban and we took the kids there a couple of years ago, the hippos and crocodiles alone made the whole trip worthwhile. And the Drakensberg, that kind of scenery just stays with you long after you’ve come home.
Mapungubwe is still on my list, but it feels like quite the trek from Durban. Has anyone done it as part of a longer road trip? Wondering if it’s worth planning a stopover rather than making it the only destination, especially travelling with children who need more than just history to keep them interested.
