Let us know which festivals you attend.

These festivals are beautiful but let’s be honest, most of them are designed for tourists and city people with money to spend. The cultural heritage in my community in Limpopo doesn’t need a festival ticket and a craft beer stall to be real, it’s alive every day in how we speak, eat, and raise our children. I just wish these celebrations did more to include rural schools and get our learners connected to their own history, not just as spectators.

Lerato sharp sharp, you’re hitting on something real there. I grew up in Soweto and even here you feel it, these festivals charge R300 entry and then sell you a “township experience” like it’s a theme park. Haibo.

But here’s my angle on it, what if community people started owning these events themselves? I know guys in my area who run street food stalls, local DJs, even phone accessories sellers who could build something proper without the big corporate sponsors calling all the shots. Keep the money circulating local.

The Limpopo cultural stuff you’re describing honestly sounds more authentic than anything I’ve seen at a ticketed event. Question is how do we package that for younger people who are scrolling TikTok all day without selling out what makes it real in the first place?
