Cricket's biggest tournament is coming back to South African soil. The International Cricket Council has confirmed that South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will jointly host the 2027 Men's Cricket World Cup, marking the first time the tournament has been played in Africa since 2003. For South African fans, that means a home World Cup is a little over a year away, and the details are starting to take shape.
Well this is proper good news. Newlands is more or less on my doorstep and Boland Park in Paarl isn’t far either, so I might actually get to a game without flying halfway across the country. Eight venues in South Africa alone is a big logistical job though, and I hope the substations around some of these grounds get proper attention before October 2027, because the last thing you want is a dip in the lights mid over at Kingsmead on a big night. I’ve sorted my own power situation years ago, solar and battery, so load shedding doesn’t bother me much anymore, but a cricket ground needs real backup, not some genny wheeled in at the last minute. I’ve wired enough of those temporary setups in my working days to know they’re not always up to the job.
Fourteen teams and this Super 7 stage sounds like it’ll need a diagram to follow at braai time, but good to see Zimbabwe and Namibia along for the ride too. Last time we shared hosting with Zimbabwe was 2003, my kids were still at school. Now they’ll be dragging their own kids along to Newlands.
Newlands in a World Cup again, that is the part I keep coming back to. Watched a few 2003 games there as a kid and the atmosphere was something else, so fingers crossed the ground situation is properly sorted before 2027 because the last thing anyone needs is a flagship venue still mid-renovation when the ICC comes calling. If they can get the ticketing right early, Cape Town games will sell out fast once semigrants and internationals realise they can pair a match with a mountain hike the next morning.
