Living in Durban my favourite fact has to be a food one, the humble bunny chow was invented right here, and there’s a whole story about it feeding workers who needed something portable to carry their curry around. We’re so proud of it, honestly Durban has the best food in SA and I’ll happily argue that with anyone.
Another one that always gets my kids talking is the Cradle of Humankind near Joburg, where some of the oldest hominid fossils on the planet were found right in our own backyard. For a country that gets such a hard time in the news, there’s a lot of wonder packed into our borders, and it’s nice to be reminded of that.

Since you’re prepping for a school assembly, here’s one that usually surprises people: Durban is home to the largest Indian population outside of India. What’s cool is how much of South Africa’s infrastructure potential is tied to these geographic and cultural foundations. Like, we’ve got three capitals spread across the country, which honestly shapes everything from fibre deployment to data centre locations. Johannesburg’s the tech hub, but Cape Town’s got the legislative centre so you see investment there too.
Also, the biodiversity angle ties into conservation tech that’s getting interesting. You see organisations using IoT sensors and data analytics to track wildlife movements, connecting back to the Kruger and that whole ecosystem management angle. Really fascinating intersection of biology and engineering.
